Upgrading the Port

The Japanese International Cooperation Agency has pledged to continue supporting KPA in upgrading port infrastructure to accelerate growth of the East Africa regional economies.

JICA has been a close partner of KPA, having funded the construction of the second container terminal at the Port of Mombasa. Recently, the partner agency completed the construction of phase two of the terminal which has increased the port’s capacity by 450,000 TEUs to the current 2.1 million TEUs.

JICA is also playing a key role in the planned development of the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zones in Mombasa

KPA is already in the process of conducting a feasibility study for the development of phase three of the second container terminal at the Port of Mombasa.
