Building collapse in Ruaka

Two bodies have been retrieved from the rubbles.

Building collapse in Ruaka

Earlier today at 3 am, a five storey building under construction collapsed and fell on an adjacent residential house in Ruaka area, Kiambaa Sub-County.

Following the unfortunate incident, a rescue operation commenced immediately by a team from the national and county government as well as the Kenya Red Cross.

Unfortunately two lives were lost and the bodies (a couple) were retrieved from the rubble, one survivor was rescued and rushed to the hospital where she is receiving treatment.

Preliminary investigations have attributed the incident to poor workmanship, with reports indicating that in May this year, the building was condemned and construction had been halted over several non-compliance issues.

The matter has also been subject of investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, where the owner has been constantly arrested by detectives and the file is currently with the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) waiting approval.

However, despite the efforts by the county planning department and actions of police, the owner of the building continued with the construction in total disregard of the law and of human life.

To this effect, as further investigations continue, I have immediately disbanded the technical committee responsible for the approval of building applications and inspection of construction of buildings.

The committee members will also be subjected to investigation and actions will be taken against those found to have conspired with rogue developers and contractors by approving and allowing continuation of sub-standard buildings.

Further, I have directed that an audit be carried out on all  buildings under construction in the county, with focus on their safety.

Those found to have violated construction regulations and are a safety hazard, a notice will be issued to stop the construction with immediate effect and where needed, demolition to take place to avert further loss of human lives.
